Mythos Opus Three | 3110NZ by LDH Kitchen | Tokyo, Japan

The exhibition at 3110NZ explores the idea of emancipation and the nature of freedom. In two of the works, Brantley's characters are seen with arms folded, firmly standing their ground. In another two works, his characters are seen soaring with momentum, purpose and determination. Together they challenge the viewer to contemplate the idea of freedom and change. They explore the notion of waiting for change versus being the change within the world that one wishes to see.

Mythos Opus Two | 2G Nanzuka Gallery | Tokyo, Japan

The exhibition at NANZUKA 2G presents an inquiry into the idea of 'manhood' through the appropriation of famous American figures. By utilizing the iconography of characters such as Batman and Robin, the path of adolescence to adulthood and what that journey brings about is explored. In our current cultural system, the perception and expectation of masculinity itself is changing due to changes in the correlation between leadership roles and hyper masculinity. With this exhibition viewers are challenged to question where we are in the perception of who the hero is. Who are our leaders, who should we follow, and why?

Hebru Brantley Stance @ Casterline Goodman Gallery

  • Casterline Goodman Gallery (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Casterline|Goodman Gallery is pleased to present Stance, an exhibition featuring the work of artist Hebru Brantley. Charged, yet strangely playful, this series highlights a poised and aloof Flyboy with arms folded over his chest depicting a clear certainty, while his smirk confounds his assurance. The position, so still and dramatized, becomes statuesque, even monumental. But a monument to what?

Brantley’s “Flyboy” characters are influenced by the heroic Tuskegee Airmen of World War II and represent a playful social commentary that is deeply linked to Brantley’s childhood growing up on the south side of Chicago.  The Flyboy character offers a heroic archetype for young children of color to explore a wide range of pop culture topics varying from sports, art, and socio-economic trends. There’s an unsettling stillness that surrounds Brantley’s figures. This eerie stillness makes room for closer inspection. Upon deeper analysis, false facades, masquerades and veiled appearances are sprinkled throughout the posed stoic figures. Brantley pokes at our certainties and reveals instead our ambiguities. We are left questioning our bureaucratic disputes, our glorified heroes and our praised monuments. Brantley serves us the disappointing and false grandeur in state ship, tribalism, and power dynamics. Stance is on view from July 29, 2019 to September 15, 2019 in Aspen, CO.

CAC honors Hebru Brantley and Gensler at Annual Benefit

On June 6, 2019, Chicago Artists Coalition (CAC) will host its annual benefit, WORK IN PROGRESS (WIP), honoring Chicago artist Hebru Brantley and design firm Gensler. The event also celebrates the one-year anniversary of CAC moving to its new home in the Kinzie Industrial Corridor. The event’s co-chairs are Director of Marketing at CFI Partners, Chanel Coney, and Jessica and Timothy Canning. As part of last year’s “construction” theme, guests were invited to dress in “creative construction” attire. While this year’s event is a celebration of CAC’s one-year anniversary in its new home, the theme is a riff on the one-year “paper” wedding anniversary.

“Then There Were Two” @ Gallery Des Baines

  • Rues des Bains 22, 1205 Geneve Switzerland (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Galerie des Bains in collaboration with Galerie Pages are thrilled to present to you: "Then There Were Two" by Hebru Brantley. It will be the second solo show of the American artist in Switzerland.

Hebru Brantley’s comment on the works for this exhibition:
“Then There Were Two is a play between the ID and the Ego. In all of my work I use characters to evoke emotion. The work for this show is coming from a personal space. I am placing the characters in a despondent space free from the trappings of the world as we know it, evoking loneliness. Today our world is so full of distractions from technology to social media we rarely have a moment alone with ourselves. The desolate landscape creates an environment that forces you to face yourself. This show is about personal space, personal journey, struggle and learning to prioritize self-care.”

UK Bronze Sculpture Release

In a departure from his pop-art creations, Brantley and Fluorescent Smogg have produced a series of bronze sculptures of Fly Boy.The pieces were sculpted by Brantley, then cast by fine art specialists Wolf and Stone using traditional methods which date from some 3000 years ago, perfected by Renaissance artists of the 15th and 16th century such as Donatello and Lorenzo Ghiberti.

Three Editions Will Be Released

Fly Boy Bronze (Classic)
Cast bronze sculpture with a classic red/brown patina.

Sculpture in bronze created using traditional lost-wax casting. The classic red/brown patina was achieved by coating the sculpture in potassium sulphide, which forms a deep brown base colour, and then applying ferric nitrate. At each stage, the sculpture was subjected to intense heat to trigger the chemical reactions that create the piece’s unique colour.Wax has been applied to seal and protect the final result.

300mm (h) × 160mm (w) × 105mm (d) 5.5kg
Edition /5, signed and numbered £8,500

Fly Boy Bronze (Gold)
Cast bronze sculpture with a buffed bright bronze finish

Sculpture in bronze created using traditional lost-wax casting. The golden colour was accomplished by working on the raw sculpture with increasingly finer grades of sandpaper and finishing with a brass brush. It is sealed with a marine-grade clear lacquer to prevent the bronze from tarnishing.

300mm (h) × 160mm (w) × 105mm (d) 5.5kg
Edition /5, signed and numbered £9,500

Fly Boy Bronze (Green)
Cast bronze sculpture with a green patina

Sculpture in bronze created using traditional lost-wax casting. The green patina was achieved by coating the sculpture in potassium sulphide, which forms a deep brown base colour, and then applying cupric nitrate. At each stage, the sculpture was subjected to intense heat to trigger the chemical reactions that create the piece’s unique colour.Wax has been applied to seal and protect the final result.

300mm (h) × 160mm (w) × 105mm (d) 5.5kg
